Nero inserts this, which is probably OK to remove:
HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run/NeroCheck = C:\WINNT\system32\NeroCheck.exe
HKCU/Software entries created: yes

Preferences Worth Making:

- Nero uses HKLM and saves user-specific preferences to HKEY_USERS [but then a new user also gets those HKEY_USERS settings]

(there is a program called "nerosvc.exe" on the nero install cdrom. i copied it to the same directory as the nero.exe program ("program files"\ahead\nero" in my case) and ran it from a command prompt while logged on as administrator as follows: nerosvc - service "Power Users" this seems to install nerosvc as a service. when i logged back on with my Power User id, nero seemed to start ok (it didn't tell me i must have burn rights). )

Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer management -> Storage -> removable archive -> Physical Locations -> choose the CD-Writer -> Action -> Properties -> Security -> Add -> pick the username you want to be allowed to use the CD-Writer (this is needed because SCSI/ATA commands can be used to format the HDD and some command are issued from controller to your CD-Writer. look at Nero help.

there is a file nerosvc.exe on the program CD that needs to be copied to the nero program folder. from the command line (in the same directory as the *exe file), type
nerosvc -service [user group]
where [user group] is the user group you want to extend permission for using the cd rom burning. you'll be prompted for the admin password. Then reboot. this provides the group w/ rights and also adds the Security tab under File/Preferences in Nero. This permission still comes and goes - seems to be something with using Windows Media Player after Nero - still working on it

We have not yet re-incorporated the "Security" feature in Nero, but hope to soon.
We do have a patch, and it seems to have had a 99% success rate with those I've sent it too.

If you would like this, along with a ReadMe file on how to implement, this should work.

Be sure to copy the file to the Nero directory, and from a DOS window, go to the C:\Program Files\Ahead\Nero directory and from their run the command similar too....

nersvc -service USERS

and as long as you get no error message, its loaded properly. Now go back into Nero, be sure to be logged in as Admin, and in Nero's FILE>PREFERENCES>SECURITY and set up the GROUP here.

And be sure the service is enabled.

You can get the patch by sending a request to techsupport4@nero.com

Group Policy Editor -> windows settings -> security settings -> local policies -> security options -> enable ->

restrict CdRom access to locally logged on user only

Command-Line Switches: Nero BurnRights: NeroBurnRightsInstaller.exe /silent /burnrights:all /path=%PROGRAMFILES%\NeroBurnRights
