Configuration We create an MSI transform (MST) to pre-configure some aspects, using Adobe Customization Wizard 9 from 'Acrobat Developer Center' - 'Enterprise deployment': http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=3993 which is basically an MSI editor. See also Extracting the Adobe Reader 9 MSI installer for enterprise deployment.

Customisation changes we make using the Adobe Customization Wizard:

  • Installation option
    • run installation - unatttended
    • If reboot required after installation - surpress reboot
  • EULA and document status
    • surpress display of EULA
  • Online and Acrobat.com features - Online features
    • disable all updates
    • in Abobe Reader - help - disable purchase adobe acrobat
    • Disable product improvement program
    • Display PDF in Browser - disable

Customisation made using TWEAK is now no longer necessary as either it has been incorpoarted in the MST (above) or Adobe have improved Reader 9 such that our customisations are no longer required (e.g. there's no splash screen and text select is there when you need it).

MSI Presumably we used AdbeRdr708_en_US_distrib.exe from which we extracted Adobe Reader 7.0.8.msi. AdbeRdr708_en_US.exe isn't extractable to give an MSI. I don't know if we additionally need any of the things in the directory, Data1.cab and Data1 directory with the cab extracted.

Fire up Windows Explorer and do the following:

    * Navigate to C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\
    * Right-click to create a new subdirectory, and call it plugins_uninstalled
    * Move all the .api files from the plug_ins subdirectory to your new plugins_uninstalled subdirectory,
except for AcroForm.api (for form-filling) and EScript.api (dependency of AcroForm.api)."

there's more in the comments too, including using JavaScript to change the interface.

"6. ... you can make even more performance improvements by moving unused Acrobat Reader plugins.
To do this, go to your install directory, probably something like
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader and just move the unnecessary plugins from the \plug_ins
directory to the \Optional directory. To learn more about which plugins you may or may not need, you can
check out Help->About Adobe Plug-Ins, and get a pretty good description of each one and what it does."
