Workstation Installation Instructions (From Image)

This document describes setting up a workstation from an image.

Contents

1.0 Tools For The Job

TWEAK version 0.9.0 RC2 or later from thegoldenear.org/tweak/ which should already be in D:\.

Restoring Image To Machine

Restore the previously saved image to the machine using CloneZilla from http://www.clonezilla.org/. Note that the hard disk you restore to must have the same device name as in the system now (i.e. hda, hdb, sda, sdb) otherwise CloneZilla won't restore to it.

2.0 Partitioning

If this workstation is to have a different role to others, such as for layout, you may want to extend some of its partitions...

3.0 Windows

3.1 Windows Installation

Enter Windows Product Key.

Activate Windows.

3.2 Windows Updates

Use Microsoft Update to install any drivers for any slightly changed or additional hardware on this machine; Internet Explorer 7; Windows Media Player 11.
Don't install .NET or Silverlight unless you specifically need them.
You are OK to install Windows Genuine Advantage then Validate Windows.

After installing, check back again for updates to the updates until no more updates are worth having.

3.3 Configuration

Change the machine's name to <organisation name>-<number>.

Join the machine to the domain: Windows-key+Break → Computer Name → Change → Member of → enter domain name then use either the winadmin or root account. Restart the workstation.

Check/set monitor refresh rate.

Driver Configuration: TWEAK: F → which ever is appropriate for this workstation for any slightly changed or additional hardware on this machine.

4.0 Software (Applications and Utilities, Drivers and Runtime Environments)

4.1 Installation

Software Deployed Manually

Printer Drivers (if any)

If you print to a printer that is anything other than the Samba + CUPS print server on SERVER pre-equipped with drivers then install a printer driver for each printer. Use a PostScript driver for PostScript printers.

Major Proprietary Applications (if any)

Major proprietary applications (if any) that are likely to only be required on particular workstations, and few at that, are best installed manually from CD/DVD. We have a separate guide to installation and configuration of various major proprietary applications. Leave their (All Users) shorcuts where they are, rather than managing them per-user.

4.2 Configuration

Applications and Utilities

Major Proprietary Applications (if any)

For major proprietary applications (if any) that are likely to only be required on particular workstations, see our separate guide to installation and configuration of various major proprietary applications.

Drivers and Runtime Environments
If You Print Direct To The Printer - Specific Windows Printer Driver

This is just for a printer attached to this specific workstation.

Use a PostScript printer driver if you have a PostScript printer.

Configure defaults for everyone, using Advanced → Printing Defaults, to print lower quality by default; black and white rather than colour; duplex (if printer supports it).
